A complicating factor in digital searches is the variety of spellings of Boethius’ name, particularly in editions from the Renaissance and by those who preserve medieval orthography. ![]() Pending the identification of a source or sources, however, editors will have some difficulty with these references. Boethius is one medieval authority whose name has been associated with several such sententiae, not all of which are easily verifiable or even authentic.Ĭonceivably many of these maxims originated together in an as yet unedited florilegium of the early thirteenth or twelfth century, or simply crystallized individually over the course of time.
